Delivering enhanced support

Guidance for Student Advisers on delivering enhanced support for students with the enhanced support adjustment.

Some students may have the ‘Enhanced Support’ adjustment added to their Schedule of Adjustments (SoA) to highlight that they may need more individualised support from their Student Advisor due to their condition.

Examples of enhanced support

  • Arranging meetings to discuss the student’s needs, focusing on:
    • Key areas of support they may need due to their condition(s)
    • Times for additional support e.g., around deadlines/exams, start of the semester
    • How often they would like to meet e.g., weekly, monthly.  It is important to remain aware of boundaries and not to over commit to individual students
    • How it is best to contact the student e.g., email, phone, MS Teams.
  • Offering to help the student track their coursework and deadline commitments by giving assistance with organisation skills and deadline reminders.
  • Act as a key contact between our Service and the student, letting us know of any concerns or issues regarding the students’ adjustments or condition.
  • Offering practical help with understanding course requirements and university routines.
  • Helping the student to manage anxieties in relation to workload.

If a School decides the enhanced support will be provided by someone other than the Student Advisor, they should provide the name to our Service at disability.service@ed.ac.uk.
