Disabled student funding

The Service can help you to apply for non-means-assessed allowances intended to cover additional costs you may incur while studying and which are a direct result of your disability, neurodiverse or health condition, or specific learning difference.

As each student's circumstances are unique, personalised funding arrangements are usually discussed during a Disability Advisor appointment.

For general enquiries regarding funding, contact disability.service@ed.ac.uk Be aware that the processing time for government funding approval can take up to three months.

Important: DLSS cannot help with financial assistance for living costs and fees.  The University’s Scholarships and Student Funding can provide further information on this type of support.

UK students: Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA)

DSA is a UK government grant which gives students extra financial support while studying.  This aid is not included as part of your maintenance loan or tuition fee.

Non-UK students

Overseas / EU students

Funding is available through the University’s Disabled Students Support Fund (DSSF) for students who are not eligible for DSA. This includes Overseas, EU and part-time students taking fewer than 60 credits per year.

To check your eligibility for DSSF funding, Book an Appointment with a Disability Advisor

Research Councils

Some research councils provide DSA for Postgraduate Research students.
