Awareness training

Details of awareness training run by the Service.

The Service runs regular awareness training sessions on a variety of topics:

  • AD(H)D: Introduction to ADHD - What is it, how does it manifest at University, how can I help students with ADHD?
  • Autism: The training is designed to increase staff awareness in the difficulties faced by Autistic students at University. The aim is to improve understanding and provide information on how to support these students in their studies.
  • Deaf/Hearing Loss: The session will provide basic knowledge about the diversity of communication and language issues experienced by students who are deaf or have hearing loss and key stratagies for meeting challenges.
  • Dyslexia: To increase awareness and understanding of the difficulties experienced by students with dyslexia and outline appropriate support
  • Dyspraxia: Introduction to Dyspraxia - What is it, how does it manifest at University, how can I help students with Dyspraxia?
  • Enhanced Contact: This interactive training has been developed to help staff to understand and implement the ‘Enhanced Support’ adjustment on a disabled student’s Schedule of Adjustments. The training is designed for Student Advisers or anyone else who is taking on the Enhanced Contact role directed by DLSS. The training will discuss some key conditions and reasons why a student may required enhanced support; what you can do as practitioners to support these students and discuss how to set clear boundaries.  The training uses case study discussions of real-life scenarios to provide practical guidance and advice, staff are also encouraged to bring their own, anonymised case studies for discussion.
  • Mental Health: This training has been developed to help staff to react appropriately when students present with mental health issues and to get students to a source of help as effectively as possible. The training uses case study discussions of real-life scenarios to provide practical guidance and advice and is suitable for any staff who have contact with students. Please be aware that the training will entail discussion of sensitive subject matter such as self-harm and suicide.
  • Visual Impairment: To develop awareness and understanding of the difficulties experienced by students who have vision loss and outline examples of appropriate support for students who have vision loss
